The Matterhorn, SwitzerlandThe Matterhorn needs no introduction. That pyramidal profile is probably the most recognisable mountain shape on earth, and yet standing below it in person, the scale of it still catches you off guard. I made this photograph as heavy cloud rolled across the summit, alternately revealing and concealing the upper ridgelines. The snow on the north face was holding the light while the rock flanks fell into deep shadow, and the contrast was remarkable.
